PASHTO
The Pashto language as a whole is a unique Indo-Iranian language that is spoken in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. More than 50 million people worldwide speak it. Following a great flowering of Pashto literature and poetry in Peshawar during the seventeenth century, the language has morphed into many dialects. The main distinctions are between northern and southern dialect as well growing separation between Pakistani and Afghan Pashto.
The modern standard from of Pakistani Pashto (called Pukhto by locals) is also known as Yousafzai Pashto.It has the distinction of being the most widely -spoken dialect of Pashto in the world, and is used in television, radio and written from throughout Khyber Pakhtunkwa as well as Pakistan and beyond.
he dialect of Pashto used in this book is native to the northern tribes around Peshawar, Mardan and Swat and uses a distinctive “hard” /kh/ sound, rather than the “soft” /sh/ sound used south of kohat. It is helpful to know that Pukhto has increasingly become an Oral language, not thtered to written text. This has led to the growing use of Urdu, and even English words in modern Pukhto. The emphasis of this book is on this exciting, dynamic and deeply poetic colloquial language.
